Adige River

The Adige River is the second longest river in northern Italy after the Po River. It is located in the province of Bolzano and it measures 255 miles in length The River derives its main source of water from the artificial Alpine region of Trentino-Aldige.

This water source supplies hydroelectric power and irrigation for the Veneto River. The Adige River has a history of many damaging floods including one that earned it a famous mark in history in 1953 when it flooded the former village of Curon Antica after a dam was finished. A church tower was built at the site to mark the occurrence. Since this was only one of the major floods in this area, constant monitoring of the riverbank and flood control is warranted. The river has been connected through artificial underground canals as part of the flood prevention.

The Adige runs east through one of the major routes through the Alps known as the Resia Pass. It then flows southeast through the Venosta valley.  It was mentioned in the German national anthem in 1922 after it was ceded to Italy.  The Adige flows out of artificial Lake Resia in the Resia Pass near the borders of Austria and Switzerland. It is joined along its southeast journey to the Adriatic Sea by several other bodies of water including the Rom, Passirio, Avisio, Noce and Fersina rivers.  One of the main advantages of this river is its ability to supply power and irrigation. One of the most notable items of interest about this river is the many battles that were fought along it.
